COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A jury has convicted a former El Paso County sheriff’s deputy of careless driving resulting in the death of an Air Force reservist.
Jurors in Colorado Springs convicted Rodney Fannin on Thursday in the crash that killed 41-year-old Capt. Vivian Elmo last August.
Investigators had alleged Fannin struck Elmo’s vehicle after running a red light at Colorado 94 and Curtis Road. He was off-duty at the time.
Fannin’s attorney had argued that Fannin had a green light. The attorney argued the lights at the intersection are faulty and can sometimes show green or yellow in all directions.
Fannin was on probation for a careless driving conviction when the crash happened. The sheriff’s office fired him following an internal investigation stemming from the crash that killed Elmo.
