No criminal charges will be filed against a man who was suspected of fatally shooting a homeless man who was living in a tent.

Lon Jones, 54, was arrested on April 2 as a suspect in the shooting death of Andre Manzanares, 41, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

The Adams County District Attorney’s Office announced today that criminal charges will not be filed in the case.

“Based on the current evidence the District Attorney cannot disprove that Jones acted in self defense at the time of the shooting,” the DA’s office said in a media release.

Prosecutors informed Manzanares’ family yesterday of the decision.

The shooting happened in a dirt lot at 404 Main Street, Brighton, where the victim had been living in a tent with his wife.

“Should additional evidence be presented to the District Attorney regarding the shooting, it will be reviewed accordingly,” the release said.

The DA’s office plans to release a decision letter detailing the development later this week, a spokeswoman said.
