Democratic state Rep. Joe Miklosi raised about $235,000 in the first quarter of this year, a sizable increase from his $104,000 in the final quarter of 2011.

Miklosi’s first-quarter figures bring his total cash on hand to more than $340,000, with seven months until Election Day.

Even with the uptick, Miklosi still lags far behind fundraising by incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Coffman of the 6th Congressional District.

Incumbents typically have an advantage in fundraising, and by contrast, Coffman raised more than $532,000 in the first quarter and reports having $1.37 million in cash on hand.

Since its origin in the 1980s, the 6th District has been a GOP stronghold, but after last year’s redistricting battle, it’s more competitive as the electorate is now divided in thirds among Republicans, Democrats and unaffiliated voters.
