FORT COLLINS — Colorado State football coach Jim McElwain has been making the social rounds since reporting to his new job in January, and tonight the former Alabama assistant will have a lot of company on his latest excursion.
The Rams’ 11th workout of spring drills will be at Glendale’s Infinity Park tonight, beginning at 6 p.m.
“We’re excited to be able to go in there,” McElwain said. “The good part is that not only can the Rams fans come see us, the other thing is to see how our guys focus after a little bit of travel, see how they re-engage their minds to focus on getting better.”
Said quarterback Garrett Grayson: “We want to go down there and show everybody, the fans we have in Colorado, that we’re improving, and that’s the goal. We know we have a lot of fans down in Denver, and we want to show them that we’re going to improve each week, including through the season.”
After the workout tonight in the rugby stadium, the Rams will go through a public scrimmage Sunday at noon at Hughes Stadium, have practices on campus next Tuesday and Thursday, and close out spring drills with the April 21 spring game at their stadium.
McElwain said the Rams are making progress in several areas.
“I think now they kind of understand the expectations,” McElwain said. “Then probably not only the expectations, but then the ‘why.’ Hey, look, if you can drain your tank in practice, still focus and play with good fundamentals and pay attention to detail, it only helps you when you play in the fourth quarter. It’s all part of that education part.
“I tell you what I’m proud of from the integration part of the whole program is how I really see both the offense and the defense coming together. I see them kind of understanding that it’s not ‘us’ and ‘them.’ It’s all ‘us.’ … One of the big things I wanted to get out of spring ball was that we’re all Rams, and together we’re a lot stronger than we are divided.”
