BRECKENRIDGE, Colo.—A Breckenridge attorney who went missing for nearly five years has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for felony theft.

A judge also ordered Royal “Scoop” Daniel on Thursday to pay $460,000 in restitution to his victims and to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

After his disappearance in 2007, Daniel was accused of embezzling at least $500,000 from his clients through real estate transactions. He pleaded guilty in February to two counts of felony theft but insists he obtained the funds with authorization and did not intend to deprive clients permanently.

Daniel was arrested last year crossing into California from Mexico.

The Summit Daily News reports () Daniel said in court that he “returned from exile” because he wanted to see things “put right” with his victims.
