DENVER—Denver’s Commission on Homelessness is asking city councilors to slow down a proposed ban on homeless camping for at least a month.
Commission members are worried because the proposal comes at a time when funding for social services is being cut and shelter space is declining. The Denver Post () reported Friday that the city is set to lose more than 300 shelter beds after April 30.
Mayor Michael Hancock told commission members on Thursday that he supports the measure, partly because it would give police a tool to get help for people on the street. He also said the city needs to make sure that downtown Denver remains a desirable destination.
The bill is set to be introduced next week and a final vote is scheduled for May 7.
