Ed Zemrau, who captained the University of Denver’s hockey team to its first national championship, died Monday night of undisclosed causes. He was 78. Zemrau played in 79 games for the Pioneers from 1956-58 and recorded an assist on the game-winning goal in a 6-2 victory over North Dakota in the 1958 title game. Zemrau later became the first athletic director at the University of Alberta and was a pioneer in Canadian athletics. He served in a variety of capacities, including a stint as the president and CEO of the World University Games from 1981-85. A celebration of his life will be held Monday in Sherwood Park, Alberta.
