CANON CITY – —Cañon City may be getting its name on the map — literally.

Cañon City Parks Department Manager Rex Brady told the Public Works Committee on Tuesday that the city has an opportunity to take part in a proposed Wayfinding System for the Southern Rockies Crossroads of Culture. The program uses informational kiosks to promote different attractions and destinations in select regions.

The four proposed gateways are I-25 and U.S. 50 in Pueblo; I-25 in Trinidad; U.S. 50 in Canon City; and U.S. 160 in LaVeta.

“I think it’s going to be incredible for our community and other communities in the entire region,” he said. “I really think it’s something we ought to look deeply at.”

The Colorado Department of Transportation offers an 80/20 split in which the community is responsible for the 20 percent. Brady said CDOT is putting $350,000 toward the project. CDOT would work cooperatively with the communities involved to design and develop the informational signage and also would build and install the kiosks. The kiosks then would become property of the community to maintain.
