ASPEN- — The purchase of a $225,000 lot at the main entrance to Redstone won approval on first reading Wednesday by Pitkin County commissioners.
The .67-acre parcel would be acquired as open space, protecting land along the Crystal River and views at the entrance to the small, historic community south of Carbondale. A second reading and public hearing on the acquisition is scheduled May 23.
The county’s Open Space and Trails board of trustees voted last week to recommend the purchase. Protecting the lot would preserve views of the historic coke ovens along Highway 133 from the south end of Redstone Boulevard and preserve views of the historic Redstone Inn from Elk Park, a county open space parcel located on the opposite side of the river.
Owner Bob McCormick approached open space officials when he decided to put the lot up for sale. It would be carved out of a parcel that contains the Redstone Country Store, located on the south end of Redstone Boulevard.
“It just didn’t seem like it would be a good place for a new building in Redstone,” said Dale Will, Open Space and Trails director, last week.
