MILAN —World champion Mark Cavendish won the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Thursday, and Boulder High School graduate Taylor Phinney crashed and Ramunas Navardauskas retained the overall lead.
Cavendish edged Matthew Goss to finish the 123-mile leg in 4 hours, 43 minutes, 15 seconds. Navardauskas is five seconds ahead of Boulder-based Garmin-Barracuda teammate Robert Hunter. Phinney, who had a swollen right ankle as a result of a crash Monday, collided with Lucas Sebastian Haedo about 18 miles from the finish. Both were swiftly back on their bikes but struggled to join the lead pack.
Phinney fell from fifth to 174th overall, 12:10 back. The AP
