Concerns for farmers dealing with historically dry conditions spurred Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District officials Friday to decide that more water needs to be released from the Colorado-Big Thompson Project’s reservoirs.

The Northern Water board of directors increased the project’s water quota to 100 percent — marking the 10th time in 55 years the quota has been set that high.

A 100 percent quota means that for every acre-foot of water C-BT shareholders own, they — being agricultural, municipal and industrial water users — will get a full acre-foot to use this year, rather than just a portion.

In April, concerns for farmers led the Northern Water board of directors to declare a 90 percent quota for C-BT water — the largest set in April since 1977 — but this week the board decided the region’s producers needed even more water.
