When left-hander Christian Friedrich made his major-league debut Wednesday at San Diego, he felt a little shaky.
“I couldn’t sleep for a couple of nights, and I ran through every scenario I could think of in my mind,” Friedrich said. “In the second inning, I was pitching out of the stretch and I thought my leg was completely moving and buckling. I looked down and it wasn’t moving, but I was thinking, ‘Oh, my God, I can’t balk in a run.’ ”
You wouldn’t know Friedrich was battling nerves. He pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, with seven strikeouts and one walk en route to victory. In tonight’s game against the Giants, his goal is to be more consistent throwing first-pitch strikes to stay ahead of hitters.
