A partnership between state highway officials and the Southern Ute Tribe resulted in the resurfacing of the entire 34-mile stretch of Colorado 151.

The Southern Utes bought materials to complete the sealing and leveling of the highway between Ignacio and the junction with U.S. 160.

During a dry spell this winter, CDOT maintenance crews sealed cracks on the highway in preparation for the chip-seal resurfacing, CDOT officials said. A chip- seal operation is done to protect a highway that is in good or fair condition.

The contributions from the Southern Ute Tribe allowed the project to move forward, said CDOT Region 5 maintenance superintendent Kyle Lester.

“We were able to resurface the entire highway due to our partnership with the Southern Ute Tribe,” said Lester. “The tribe purchased materials, and we completed the sealing and leveling on the highway and contracted the project. We expect this work with extend the life of this highway seven years.”

The project was contracted for $1.3 million to Intermountain Slurry Seal.
