WHEAT RIDGE, Colo.—Police aren’t sure why a man shot his wife at a Denver area nursing home before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting happened Sunday at the Wheatridge Manor Care Center.

Police say 66-year-old Donald W. Schaffer of Westminster shot his wife, 69-year-old Joyce L. Schaffer, as she lay in her bed before shooting himself with the handgun. She had been there for about 10 months recovering from a broken hip.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Spinder said Monday that the investigation hasn’t uncovered a clear motive.

The Schaffers were married for 43 years.

Family members issued a statement saying that the Schaffers were “very much in love” and that they believed they were back together after being separated for the last several months.
