The month of May has very few junior day events and even less summer football camps, but that doesn’t mean this is not one of the busiest times of the year for football recruits across the state. The spring evaluation period does not officially end until May 31, and that means college coaches can be visiting athletes at their high school to say hello and to evaluate them.
College coaches will be calling their top-rated recruits during this time, as well. If you are a recruit who has yet to receive a call from your dream school of, say, Colorado or Colorado State, it may be time to reevaluate where you really rank among their recruits. Outside of a scholarship offer, these calls are the most attention a program can show you, so take every single one that you receive seriously.
This time period will also be used for finalizing your summer camp schedules. Do you think you can go to Boulder or Fort Collins and impress the coaches enough to really get on their radar? Some feel the cost of the camps is worth the gamble so it depends on the financial situation of families. Finding college camps and showcasing your skills in front of coaches is worth the investment if you are staying within a radius close to your home.
Recruits are able to call college coaches during the summer months, but this period is the last time that they can call you until early in your senior year. Do all that you can to impress them by making sure they have access to your highlight video, and your contact information. The easier you make it for them, the simpler it will be for them to contact you if they are interested.
Quick Hitters
• Grandview wide receiver/defensive back Tanner Gentry received an offer from the coaches at Air Force last week, then followed it up with an impressive showing over the weekend at the Nike Camp in California. He was mentioned by Adam Gorney of Rivals.com as others who impressed offensively.
• Roaring Forks tight end Trae Moxley and his team finished 3-7 a year ago but that didn’t stop Colorado State from offering him a scholarship. “They told me that I was the number one prospect in Colorado for what I was doing (tight end)," Moxley told GreenandGoldNews.com, "and they wanted me to be committed as soon as I possibly could so they could check me off their list and know that they had me as a CSU Ram. I thought that was kind of cool that they told me that I was the number one prospect in Colorado."
• Windor defensive end Sean Glenn received his first scholarship offer earlier this spring from South Dakota State. The University of South Dakota extended an offer as well. “They offered me on Thursday," Glenn said. "They just gave me a call and said they were offering me a scholarship there."
• Douglas County offensive lineman Blake Nowland remains a sought-after recruit. He currently holds offers from Colorado, Colorado State, Air Force, and Wyoming, but plans to make a decision soon. “It will probably be in early-to-late June," Nowland said.
