GREELEY — Weld County is doubling its investment to $4 million in the Northern Colorado Regional Crime Lab — a building that should be open Sept. 1, 2013.
A week after Larimer County became the fourth of five participating agencies to sign an intergovernmental agreement, officials announced Monday that the lab will break ground in September, with Weld paying for the building and the others sharing operations and maintenance costs once it is open.
Loveland, Larimer County, Weld and Greeley have officially signed on. Fort Collins is expected to follow suit June 5.
The five law enforcement agencies already share their evidence-processing expertise, and the lab building will put 16 experts under one roof, speeding the process and, ultimately, justice, officials said.
“This project is the only one of its kind I know of in the state, if not nationally,” said Weld County Sheriff John Cooke.
