A 16-year-old was rushed to the hospital with head injury Tuesday, after he crashed his mountain bike near Boulder Canyon.

The victim and his 15-year-old friend, both Boulder High School students, were biking on the Link Trail, between Boulder Canyon Drive and Betasso Preserve Open Space, according to a news release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 5:30 p.m., the two started back down the trail. About a quarter from the bottom of the trail, the 15-year-old completed a jump over a tree stump and stopped to wait for his friend.

When the victim attempted the jump, his front wheel hit a rock causing him to fall over his handle bars. He landed on the right side of his head and face.

The victim was wearing a helmet but did loose consciousness for a moment.

An additional bicyclist saw the crash and continued down the trail until he found cell service. The man called 9-1-1 around 6:18 p.m.

Rescue crews hiked up the trail where the found the victim, who was conscious but not fully alert. The victim, whose name has not been released was carried down the remainder of the trail where he was loaded into an ambulance.

Both of the bicyclists were taken to Boulder Community Hospital.
