A pilot who died in an airplane crash on the Eastern Plains has been identified.

Richard “Rick” Tackabury, 65, of Wiggins, died Monday when the kit plane he was piloting crashed at the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport, according to a media release from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

Tackabury’s daughter, Laura Jean Tackabury, 42, was seriously injured in the crash. She was taken by helicopter to the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. Details on her injuries were not released.

Richard Tackabury, an experienced pilot, was killed instantly, the sheriff’s office said. Tackabury was flying an “Air Cam experimental kit plane he had recently built himself and this was apparently the third time he had flown this aircraft.”

Witnesses told investigators the pilot was attempting to land when there was a loss of control.

The cause of the crash will be determined by the National Transportation Safety Board.
