‘s bid to gain a place on the U.S. Olympic rowing team took another positive step over the weekend when the U.S. women’s eight set a world record in a heat race at the 2012 World Rowing Cup II races in Lucerne, Switzerland. The U.S. team went on to win the World Cup.
The record time was 5 minutes, 54.17 seconds, beating the previous best of 5:55.50 set by the U.S. in 2006.
Ritzel, whose grandfather Red Miller coached the Denver Broncos to Super Bowl XII , took up rowing at Yale after attending Douglas County High School in Castle Rock. The U.S. women’s eight boat has qualified for the Olympics, but the individual rowers won’t be named until next month.
