Getting your player ready...

How much car can you build for $500? How fast can you make that car? And, more important, how sturdy can you make it?

That’s the part of the premise behind the 24 Hours of Le Mons mock marathon auto race this weekend near Byers. Start with the venerable 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France, then remove the respect, snooty attitude and fancy cars, and vroom! You’ve arrived at the LeMons.

The race has a $500 spending limit on the car (exclusive of safety gear), and crazy themes and modifications are encouraged. Cars as viking ships. Cars as chariots. Cars as covered wagons. People in costumes, plus fun penalties for miscreants — like making team members put on Village People costumes and dance around the paddock to the tune of “YMCA,” for example.

Tech inspections are today, with racing Saturday and Sunday, from about 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the High Plains Raceway off U.S. 36 in Deer Trail, east of Byers. Check for information. The Denver Post
