Levin leads by one at Memorial
DUBLIN, Ohio — Spencer Levin gets another crack at his first PGA Tour win, this time with a smaller lead and a lot more star power behind him.
Levin posted a 3-under-par 69 Saturday in the third round of the Memorial for a one-shot lead over Rory Sabbatini (71).
Levin had a six-shot lead going into the final round of the Phoenix Open this year until he squandered it away on the back nine.
Rickie Fowler also had a 69, one of only three rounds in the 60s, and is three shots behind.
Fowler will play in the final round with Tiger Woods, a four-time Memorial champion who is very much in the picture. Woods had a share of the lead early but fell back with a sloppy short game on the back nine and had to settle for a 73. He is four shots back.
Woods already has won the Memorial more than anyone, and if he can rally from four shots to win today, he would join tournament host Jack Nicklaus at No. 2 in career wins on the PGA Tour at 73.
Lewis in control at ShopRite • GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Stacy Lewis tied a tournament 36-hole record with a second-round 65 in the ShopRite LPGA Classic to maintain the lead.
Lewis’ two-day total of 130 leads Anna Nordqvist, who shot a 67, by six strokes and is seven strokes better than the third-place foursome of So Yoen Ryu, Azahara Muñoz, Katherine Hull and Paula Creamer.
Footnotes. Jay Haas will carry a three-shot lead into the final round of the Champions tour Principal Charity Classic in West Des Moines, Iowa, after shooting a 6-under 65. Larry Mize eagled the 18th hole to get within three of Haas at 8-under. … Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand took a one-stroke lead at the Wales Open after shooting a 4-under 67 in the third round in Newport, Wales. Joost Luiten and Ross Fisher are tied for second.
