WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney has won the New Mexico Republican presidential primary, adding to a delegate total that already exceeds the number needed to win the nomination.
Romney also won presidential primaries Tuesday in New Jersey, South Dakota, Montana and California.
A total of 264 delegates were at stake in Tuesday’s contests. Romney already had 1,266 delegates entering Tuesday. He needs 1,144 to win the nomination. Only one Republican presidential primary remains, in Utah on June 26.
In California, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein faced 23 challengers on the ballot. Voters were also considering a proposal to raise cigarette taxes by $1 a pack to fund cancer research.
Former New Mexico Rep. Heather Wilson won the Republican primary to fill the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman. Rep. Martin Heinrich defeated state auditor Hector Balderas for the Democratic nomination.
In Montana, Rep. Denny Rehberg won the Republican primary to challenge Democratic Sen. Jon Tester. Republicans also were selecting a nominee in hopes of taking the governor’s mansion after eight years under Democrat Brian Schweitzer.
