Q: I recently purchased a new computer and want to donate the old. Is there an easy way to totally remove all the data from the old computer? — Linda Corry

A: I would recommend physically removing the hard drive and donating the computer without it. There isn’t an easy way to wipe out a hard drive so that no one, including cyber experts, can retrieve old information stored on the disk. Third-party software is available to help with the process, but the last thing you’d want to do is spend money on an item you’re about to give away. If you’re not concerned about the computer landing in the hands of a tech-savvy person who might want to dig up your old information, you can format the hard drive yourself. Just search “format hard drive” in the help and support section in the Windows start menu for instructions, or visit to see a list of tips for donating a computer.
