DENVER—Denver prosecutors have filed charges against a woman accused of taking more than $243,000 from a charity that produced firefighter calendars to raise money for a children’s hospital.
Kirsten Hamling surrendered Tuesday on multiple counts of theft, charitable fraud, filing a false tax return and failure to file a tax return and one count of attempting to influence a public servant. Her bond is set at $10,000.
Prosecutors say Hamling created Fired Up For Kids as a nonprofit organization to raise money for the burn unit at Children’s Hospital Colorado. The group sold calendars with pictures of firefighters. Hamling is accused of improperly using money from the group for personal expenses, including airline tickets.
Her lawyer said last year the group wasn’t a nonprofit.
