FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Denver man accused of impersonating a firefighter near a massive wildfire in northern Colorado has a criminal history.
Larimer County sheriff’s officials say 30-year-old Michael Stillman Maher was arrested Sunday after crossing into the fire area using a stolen government license plate and phony credentials. His bond was set at $15,000 Monday.
The Coloradoan reports Maher’s criminal history in the past decade includes pleading guilty to third-degree sexual assault and pleading guilty to charges in Eagle County of disorderly conduct by discharging a firearm and falsely reporting a fake crime. The Reporter-Herald reports the convictions were for misdemeanors.
Maher didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment Monday.
A Facebook page for Maher includes photos of him in firefighting gear in a helicopter and with Gov. John Hickenlooper.
