GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—Garfield County is asking the federal Bureau of Land Management for a bigger role setting rules to protect the greater sage grouse on federal land.

County officials are worried because the primary threats have been identified as oil and gas development, roads and other construction that fragments the bird’s habitat.

According to the Glenwood Springs Post Independent ( ), county commissioners on Monday unanimously approved a resolution asserting the county’s rights. Other counties in the region are considering similar resolutions.

Sagebrush-covered BLM lands in northwest Colorado cover nearly 2 million acres.
