Denver-area janitors plan to march downtown today and hold a strike authorization vote in the face of an expiring contract.

The Service Employees International Union Local 105 represents about 2,300 janitors that work at buildings in downtown Denver and a portion of the Denver Tech Center.

The workers are seeking a raise of about 25 cents an hour and better health-care benefits. The union said Denver janitors now earn an average annual wage of $14,441.

Janitors will assemble at 3:30 p.m. at 17th and Welton streets. They’ll hold the strike authorization vote at 4 p.m. at Republic Plaza.

The vote would authorize union negotiators to vote for a strike if negotiations with building owners fail to bring a new contract. The current contract expires at the end of June.

The SEIU said it represents janitors in 95 percent of downtown Denver buildings.
