Q: I am trying to figure out which would serve my needs better, the Kindle Fire or an iPad. I am looking for something for traveling — to read books, watch movies, check email and to check in with the airlines. I am not a techie by any means and both of these devices fall within my price range.

A: The main reason to buy a Kindle Fire instead of an iPad is price: Amazon’s tablet costs $200, while the lowest-priced iPad is $500. If both are in your price range, I would go with the iPad. It has a bigger and higher-resolution touchscreen, which vastly improves video and photo viewing and makes writing emails easier because of a larger virtual keyboard. The iPad also runs smoother. If you go with the iPad, I would recommend paying $3 for the GPlayer app, so you can view different movie formats, and downloading the free Kindle app.
