DENVER—A crackdown has been ordered after some of Colorado’s appointed county public trustees used public funds they oversee to profit or personally benefit from their position.

Gov. John Hickenlooper ordered new guidelines after a review of public records by the Denver Post ( ) showed one public trustee rented office space for the agency in a building he co-owns, while another reimbursed the costs of a retiring employee’s farewell party.

The trustees oversee the state’s foreclosure process and are not required to submit budgets to anyone for approval.

Hickenlooper has ordered the trustees to submit conflict of interest reports and he now requires approval for purchases over $5,000.
