Rick DeWitt took a phone call Tuesday afternoon, but he asked a favor.
“Can you hold on a second?” he said. “I’ve got to make a putt here.”
Did he make the putt?
“No. It was about a 25-footer. But I gave it a good roll,” said DeWitt, a six-time Colorado Golf Association amateur player of the year who is competing in the U.S. Senior Open this week in Lake Orion, Mich.
Along with Arvada’s DeWitt, Doug Rohrbaugh of Carbondale qualified for the Open, to be played at Indianwood Golf Club, starting Thursday. Legendary names such as Tom Watson, Tom Kite, Hale Irwin and Fred Couples are in the field.
DeWitt, 55, calls this “the biggest tournament I’ve ever been in” since turning pro in 2007. His week of practice so far, he said, could have gone better.
“I’ve got to start playing better,” he said. “This is a ball striker’s course. You can’t play out of the traps on this course. I’ve got to be accurate off the tee and the fairways.”
DeWitt got married Saturday night. His new bride, Cathy, was on her way to Michigan on Tuesday.
“This is our honeymoon,” DeWitt said. “It’ll be a happy one regardless of how I do. It’s great to be here, but obviously I want to make the cut and do well.” Adrian Dater, The Denver Post
