The Big Ten and Pac-12 announced Friday that they have scrapped their plan to schedule games against each other in all sports, the conferences said in a joint statement.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany says the league recently learned from Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott that coordinating a non-conference football schedule for 24 teams across two leagues was too complicated to pull off. He noted the Pac-12’s nine-game conference schedule and previous non-conference commitments.

The previously announced agreement was scheduled to begin with games in 2017. Scott says in a joint statement released Friday that the Pac-12 wants to maintain its nine-game conference schedule while keeping as much flexibility in out-of-conference scheduling as possible.

Last month, Colorado officials announced a 2016 game at Michigan. It is just one game, and the Wolverines are not schedule to play in Boulder in return. It will be the first game between the teams since 1997.

Colorado is 1-3 against Michigan and 35-64-3 all-time against the Big Ten, (including 18-49-2 versus Nebraska).

Scott says the two leagues will continue a close relationship, including their long-standing partnership with the Rose Bowl.
