Career highlights: Byers spent much of his career dueling with fellow heavyweight Rulon Gardner to qualify for world championships and Olympic Games, finally . He won a gold medal at the 2002 world championships, a bronze at the worlds in 2007 and a world silver in 2009. Byers , is a Sergeant First Class in the Army and is a member of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program. He is in his 13th year on the U.S. national team.
