Colorado Rockies starter Juan Nicascio will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing microfracture surgery under his left knee cap Monday in Denver, the team said.

Four bone chips were removed from his leg and the microfracture surgery was done to promote healing. But it will sideline Nicasio for roughly four months.

Without any setbacks he would be available to potentially pitch in the Dominican instructional league in November.

Nicasio injured his knee attempting to field a ground ball hit back at him in June. When he increased physical activity, fluid would build up in his knee, leading to the discovery of bone chips.

Nicasio was one of baseball’s best stories this season, returning from a broken neck last season. He went 2-3 in 11 starts this season with a 5.28 ERA.
