SALT LAKE CITY—Sandy police investigating after a 2-year-old Denver boy shot himself in the head at his grandparents’ home say they’re forwarding the case to prosecutors to screen for possible charges.
Sandy Police Sgt. Jon Arnold has identified the boy as Ethan Hearty.
The toddler was airlifted to Primary Children’s Medical Center after emergency crews were called about 7 p.m. Tuesday, but he died at the hospital.
It was not immediately clear how the boy got hold of his grandfather’s 9 mm handgun. Arnold says the boy was alone in a bedroom at the time of the shooting. Other family members were elsewhere in the house.
Arnold says the district attorney is asked to review any death investigation. A determination is expected Thursday.
