After a two year hiatus, tells Reverb that are back in the business of making music. Widowers are nearly done recording their new album and Talk Talk caught up with lead singer Marchant to get the deets and why there will be no Widowers UMS show this week. How did the new album come to be since you guys weren’t gigging together anymore?
Widowers stopped playing live over two years ago, despite never really announcing a breakup. The band members and I are really good friends, but we had different projects to tend to. I was in Houses, Cory Brown is half of and Bryan Marcus is in , to name a few. The timing worked out really well because we were in between things. When I initially started writing a Widowers album a couple of years ago, it ended up being too folky, so I decided to make it a solo effort. While writing, I wanted my efforts to reflect a full length instead of a bunch of EPs.
Ultimately, we would like Widowers to make that move towards electronic and psychedelic. I wrote most of the album on a piano, despite it not being my best instrument. By doing so, the piano wasn’t going to allow me to rest on my laurels and follow up on familiar chord changes. The new album has a collective feel to the process in the same approach as Broken Social Scene. Mark Weaver (bass player) is helping arrange the new material and Josh Trinidad plays trumpet.
When can we expect the new album?
Seventy-five percent of the album is done and we’re looking at a late fall release. We’re self-releasing the album, but we hope it gets picked up.
What’s the deal with UMS?
Unfortunately I won’t be doing any performances at UMS this year. I was involved in a car accident six weeks ago and my ribs are still healing. We’ve had multiple opportunities to play great shows, but have had to decline as a result.

Camp Fest 2012
is this week, and that means we’re right around the midpoint of summer. Chances are you’ve been too busy to make it to the mountains to go camping or see any of the beautiful scenery our fair state has to offer. Not to fret. Camp Fest 2012 is here to rescue you from those city town blues for one last hurrah over Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 2) in Georgetown, Colo. If the flyer is any indicator of the campgrounds, it appears that the festivities will be taking place at the Garden of Eden.
