KREMMLING, Colo.—The new University of Colorado chief financial officer is warning that state higher education funding could significantly dry up within the next five years.

Todd Saliman issued the warning Thursday during a CU regents retreat at President Bruce Benson’s mountain ranch near Kremmling.

Saliman told the board that higher education in Colorado is at risk for deep, quick cuts if there isn’t additional state revenue available to support continued enrollment growth.

Regent Stephen Ludwig, of Denver, questioned whether CU should take a lead in trying to find alternative funding, such as asking for a tax increase.

The Boulder Daily Camera reports ( ) that state funding for the CU system for the fiscal year that began July 1 totals $141 million. That is down from $209 million in fiscal year 2009. During the same period, enrollment has grown.
