 Colorado residents have the 20th-lowest car insurance costs in the nation, according to new research published Monday by .

The typical Colorado household pays 2.3 percent of its annual income for car insurance, whereas the typical Michigan household pays eight percent – which is the highest in the nation.

CarInsuranceQuotes divided the median cost for car insurance by the median household income in each state.

It also said the median cost burden for insurance in Colorado was $1,562 per year.

The five most expensive states were Michigan, Louisiana, Kentucky, West Virginia and Mississippi.

The least expensive state was Massachusetts, where the typical household pays 1.43 percent of its annual income for car insurance. North Carolina, Hawaii, Alaska, and Oregon round out the five most affordable states.
