DENVER—The National Weather Service confirms a tornado touched down over the weekend near Mount Evans at around 11,900 feet.

The agency says the tornado, which touched down Saturday afternoon, could be the second-highest one recorded in the U.S.

A hiker photographed a twister at 12,000 feet in Sequoia National Park in California in 2004.

Meteorologists say some high-altitude twisters go unrecorded because they occur in sparsely populated areas.
