As we enter the final full month of summer, changes in the weather will begin to occur and will definitely be more noticeable by the end of August.
Days will become shorter as we head through the month, with more than an hour of daylight lost, and it will begin to feel cooler, as the average high and average low drop by about five to six degrees by Aug. 31.
The weather on a typical August day is very similar to the weather on a day in June or July. Sunny and dry mornings will give way to afternoon clouds. These clouds are a precursor to scattered thunderstorms that develop and move in from the foothills. However, the big difference with thunderstorms this month is that they are less likely to be severe because of a more stable atmosphere. These storms can be slow-moving, so the threat of flash flooding still exists in August thunderstorms.
The latest forecast from the Climate Prediction Center is for a continuation of above-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation for northeastern Colorado.
