Some like it hot. Even when it comes to margaritas.

One of the most popular elements of Salt on the Rim 2012 was choosing the Best Margarita, and when the votes were counted the winner was a jalapeño-infused concoction from Mezcal.

The savory beverage added a nice kick to this annual summer soiree chaired by Terri Fisher, Gregory Sargowicki, Lawrence French, John Farnam and Paul Heitzenrater.

Salt on the Rim, a benefit for the , began about 15 years ago when the late Georgia Imhoff and her husband, Walt, invited a small group of friends to join them for margaritas and a bite to eat in the back yard of their Greenwood Village home.

It has since grown to a food- and beverage-tasting extraordinaire.

This year, 381 people gathered at Denver Botanic Gardens on Friday to sample food and drinks from purveyors that included Chinook Tavern, Lime, Japoix, Brio, Lifestyles Catering, The Palm and Edge at the Four Seasons Hotel Denver.

The $41,700 that was raised goes to the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect.

Dr. Des Runyan, the Kempe Center’s executive director, was among those attending Salt on the Rim. Patricia Peterson, the foundation’s president and chief executive officer, was there, too, along with Andy Boian, chairman of the foundation board, and such fellow members as Ren Cannon, Patrice Gendelman, Jon Kruljac, Jamie Angelich, Gail Johnson, Mark Smith and Sandee Walling.
