FORT COLLINS — Marquise Law is a walking comedy show, the kind of player who bends over backward to tell the joke that makes teammates laugh.
This season, however, the Colorado State senior wide receiver appears headed toward making his coaches smile — and without having to say a word.
Law built upon a strong spring football performance, one that led quarterback Garrett Grayson to call him the “MVP of this spring in my eyes,” with an equally impressive effort in the summer. Law attacked the weight room, 7-on-7s and the player-run practices with the same hunger.
“I think Mr. Law has had the best summer of any of the wideouts,” CSU offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin said. “He’s taken great leadership. He’s finishing his drills. He’s catching the ball well. I think Marquise can be a big-time player for us, a playmaker.”
If that turns out to be the case, it would be a huge boost for a CSU offense that got very little production from its wide receivers last season. Three of the top four pass catchers were not receivers, and Law was buried in the fray, catching just three passes for 9 yards in eight games.
He felt like he got a new lease on his playing career when coach Jim McElwain took over as head coach in the winter. Law’s focus sharpened. His effort level shot through the roof. An imposing figure at 6-foot-4 and 212 pounds, Law’s play is now living up to his size.
And while he addressed his changed state of mind after the spring game, he liked the social side to his summer as much as the physical work he put in.
“I loved this summer. It was great for me,” Law said. “The best thing was just being with my teammates. One of my goals was to just get close to everyone, the guys that I don’t know as well. Just get guys out of their comfort zone.
“As a team, we accomplished a lot. Personally, that’s what I wanted to accomplish, something as a team and do my part, do my job as a receiver and as a leader.”
