Northern League

GREELEY CENTRAL Coach: Mike Heatherly 2011 record: 1-9 Returning starters: Three offense, three defense Last playoff appearance: 1996 Strengths: The Wildcats are going to be inexperienced up front, “but we’re bigger than we’ve been,” Heatherly says. “So that’s something to build on.” Starting quarterback Shawn Dixon is back, which will be a plus. Weakness: The inexperience also extends to other places on the roster, and it’s a youthful inexperience. Players to watch: Shawn Dixon, QB, Sr., 5-8, 160; Jesus Ortega, RB, Jr., 5-11, 200; Travis Lechman, RB, Jr., 5-9, 165; James Desmond, WR/DB, Jr., 5-7, 155; Juan Chaparro, LB, Sr., 5-7, 155; Jacob Gray, DB, Sr., 5-10, 155; Andreu Cotto, DL/OL, Jr. 6-1, 210 In 2012: “We’re more talented that we’ve been before,” Heatherly says. “But it’s young, it’s inexperienced, so you’re not sure what you’re getting. We have guys that have never been tested.” The Wildcats expect to be competitive.

GREELEY WEST Coach: Mark Roggy 2011 record: 8-4 Returning starters: Eight offense, nine defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Pine Creek in quarterfinals, 35-0) Strengths: The Spartans return their entire offensive line, which “will help us a lot,” Roggy says. On defense, the front seven is expected to be strong. Weakness: Roggy is still searching for a starting quarterback this season, with a “big battle going on.” The team also lost a lot in the secondary. “That’s going to be the big key for us, is to get the back-end of our defense ready,” Roggy says. Players to watch: David Eddy, RB/QB/LB, Sr., 6-0, 200; Austin Waterman, RB/TE/LB, Sr., 6-2, 236; Andrew Bruning, WR/DB, Sr., 5-11, 165 In 2012: The Spartans got a sobering reminder that this is just football when Roggy’s 25-year-old son, Tyler, drowned on a camping trip in July. “I’m doing things day-by-day,” Roggy says. As for the season outlook, Eddy looks to have the inside track on the quarterback job, and should be a weapon offensively. As with many teams, health will determine how far the Spartans go. “I’ve gone into seasons with a lot less than I’ve had this season,” Roggy says.

<!– –> LONGMONT Coach: Doug Johnson 2011 record: 11-1 Returning starters: Eight offense, eight defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Castle View in quarterfinals, 42-16) Strengths: Weakness: Players to watch: Marcus Johnson, OL/DL, Sr.; 6-3, 285; Forrest Wetterstrom, QB, Sr., 6-2, 185; Miles Bergner, K/P, Sr., 6-1, 190 Note: Coach Johnson could not be reached for comment.

LOVELAND Coach: John Poovey 2011 record: 3-7 Returning starters: Thirteen offense, nine defense Last playoff appearance: 2010 Strengths: Thirteen returning starters on offense standing out? That’s because Loveland started 18 different kids on offense last season due to various injuries and other issues. By the end of the season, nine different sophomores were getting regular playing time. It all means that the roster is filled with experienced juniors this season, “and that’s when you really expect them to be able to compete,” Poovey says. Weakness: While the depth is there, not much is known about that depth. “We could be very deep in average players, but we might be very deep in good athletes,” Poovey says. “There are a lot of unknowns about how much progress we’ve made. Right now, all we’ve had to compare it to is ourselves.” Players to watch: Willie Dunkelman, RB/DT/S, Sr.; Greg Hecker, RB/DB, Sr.; Anthoney Hunziker, OL/DL, Sr.; Mike Zweigle, QB, Jr.; John Freismuth, WR/DB, Jr.; Ryan McCloughan, DB/OLB/RB, Jr. In 2012: Last season was a struggle for the Indians. Case in point: Dunkelman, a safety this season, spent a lot of time on the defensive line a year ago. “We had to put players on the field who could tackle,” Poovey says. With the expected depth this year, players should be able to play in their natural positions. Combine that fact with good chemistry and a strong offseason, and Poovey says a return to the playoffs isn’t out of the question. It’s a young team, yes, but much of that youth already has a lot of varsity experience. “I think we can be competitive with this group,” Poovey says.

MOUNTAIN VIEW Coach: Bart Mayes 2011 record: 7-4 in 3A Returning starters: Five offense, four defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to John F. Kennedy in first round, 34-27) Strengths: A tough, hardworking senior class will anchor the team. Offensive and defensive lines should be solid. Weakness: The Mountain Lions will be starting a sophomore at quarterback, so inexperience will be an issue. Skill positions on both offense and defense are a bit depleted. Players to watch: Camden Nichols, OT, Jr., 6-2, 246; Jeremiah Clymer, RB, Sr., 5-11, 170; Dan Carreon, OL, Sr., 6-1, 210; Thomas McDaniel, LB, Sr., 5-11, 175; Josh Sandin, WR, Sr., 6-3, 180 In 2012: Though facing challenges with the move up to 4A, Mountain View expects to be competitive in its league.

NIWOT Coach: Josh Brewer 2011 record: 2-8 Returning starters: Five offense, five defense Last playoff appearance: 2008 Strengths: Senior leadership will play a big role in Niwot’s season, and will help a large sophomore class along. “I think they’re on their way to being pretty good football players,” Brewer says. Strong at quarterback and linebacker. Weakness: Depth. “That’s probably the toughest thing we’ll have to endure,” Brewer says. Players to watch: Nate Merriman, QB, Sr., 6-3, 190; Cahill Kelleghan, TE, Sr., 6-3,180; Elijah Noterman, WR/DB, Jr., 6-0, 151; Jake Sarosi, LB, Sr., 6-0, 190; Bryan Meek, LB, Jr., 6-1, 155; Billy Drake, FS, Sr., 5-9, 135 In 2012: The Cougars want to be competitive, and their first-year coach seeks a culture change. “Niwot hasn’t been known for football for a while,” Brewer says, “and I hope to change that quickly.” The former assistant at Arizona Western College wants a higher standard in the program, and he wants his players to have a winning attitude.

THOMPSON VALLEY Coach: Clint Fick 2011 record: 1-9 Returning starters: Six offense, six defense Last playoff appearance: 2005 Strengths: It’ll be a team led by seniors “that have some hunger to change things and turn them around,” Fick says. The Eagles should have some size, too. Weakness: Fick assumed the head coach’s role a week-and-a-half before practice started when former coach Michael DeWall accepted a job as assistant principal and athletic director at Woodland Park. “It’s been a battle, to say the least,” says Fick, who coached the Eagles from 2003-05 before taking over at Fossil Ridge. “This is as difficult of a situation that I’ve been in.” Depth, too, is an issue. Players to watch: Tyler Kiess, OL/DL, Sr., 6-1, 251; Sam Baca, LB, Sr., 6-0, 195; Jordan Williams, S, Jr., 6-0, 165; Spencer Shook, QB, Sr., 6-3, 206; Francisco Marquez, LB/RB, Sr., 5-9, 180; Chris Sweeney, OT, Sr., 6-4, 268 In 2012: Fick inherits a program that has won five games in five seasons. But, he says, “I always have high expectations.” He would like this team to compete for a playoff spot this season. “A lot of people will probably look at that and find humor in it,” Fick says, “but if we can instill the work ethic in all of our kids, I think we’ll be competitive.” Still, he knows there’s a difference between being competitive and making the postseason, and that’s a gap Thompson Valley may not be ready to bridge just yet.

WINDSOR Coach: Chris Jones 2011 record: 13-1 in 3A Returning starters: Six offense, six defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Beat Silver Creek in 3A championship game, 14-7) Strengths: The system for the defending 3A champions remains the same across the board, a consistency that will help. The backfield will be strong, especially at running back — a spot of emphasis in Jones’ run-heavy offense. Defensively, they’ll be strong up the middle. Weakness: The depth isn’t quite where they want it to be yet, especially with moving up a class. “We’re as good as our third-string,” Jones says. Expect some youth on special teams. Players to watch: Joe Sanger, QB, Sr., 6-0, 180; Sean Glenn, DE, Sr., 6-3, 260; Lucas Watts, ILB, Sr., 6-1, 205; Lance Cox, CB, Sr., 5-11, 180; Jordan Porterfield, RB/OLB/P/KR, Sr., 5-10, 175; Alex Baldwin, WR, Sr., 6-1, 185; Sean McAvoy, ILB, Sr., 5-9, 185; Duncan Goodrich, OLB, Sr., 6-1, 180; Trenton Noller, C, Jr., 6-3, 310; Chuck Peck, DE, Jr., 6-3, 215 In 2012: The Wizards, recovering from no real downtime after winning the 3A title, move up to 4A this year. There’s enthusiasm and excitement in this year’s group, Jones says, but they’re not resting on the championship. They’ll work week-to-week. “We’re only as good as our last practice, our last game,” Jones says. On offense, they’ll use the play-action pass a bit more.

Mountain League

BROOMFIELD Coach: Gary Davies 2011 record: 9-3 Returning starters: Seven offense, seven defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Monarch in quarterfinals, 23-21) Strengths: A strong, experienced senior class is ready to shine. A large contingent of that group has either started or played a big role since their sophomore season. The Eagles will also have decent team size and fairly good speed. “We’ve been faster,” Davies says, “but we have the components physically that could be a good team.” Weakness: Depth, especially at running back and in the defensive secondary, is an issue. Most of Broomfield’s wide receivers are also starting at defensive back. Players to watch: Andrew McLean, DL/OL, Sr.; Tyler Stuemky, OL/DL, Sr.; Andrew Davies, LB/OL, Sr.; Dan Perse, LB/WR, Sr.; Angelo Perez, QB, Sr.; Ryan McCulley, RB, Sr. In 2012: Broomfield High School has captured a number of championships in other sports recently. Its football team would like to join that movement. “There’s a standard at Broomfield,” Davies says, “and we’re just trying to live up to that.” The Eagles have a number of kids who won a title with the baseball team last spring, so that championship experience is already on the roster. Broomfield’s non-league schedule is very challenging, and should give it a good idea of if it’ll be in the 4A title hunt. “If we survive non-league and come out healthy, I think we’ll be pretty good,” Davies says.

GEORGE WASHINGTON Coach: Fred Harris 2011 record: 3-7 in 5A Returning starters: Four offense, six defense Last playoff appearance: 2009 Strengths: The Patriots don’t return a lot, but they do get back all of their kids that were all-league selections. Weakness: GW is “very thin,” Harris says. “There’s hardly any depth.” Players to watch: Meshack Logan, LB, Sr.; Garry Hill, RB/LB, Sr.; Alex Craft, OL, Sr.; Nick Parker, QB, Sr. In 2012: Harris’ aim is to rebuild this program, and increase the number of kids participating in it. The drop down to 4A “was supposed to help us, but they sat us in a tough conference,” Harris says. Because of that, and because of the lack of depth, playoffs this season “would be a stretch,” the coach says.

GOLDEN Coach: Mike Joseph 2011 record: 1-9 Returning starters: Five offense, four defense Last playoff appearance: 2002 Strengths: The Demons return experience at the skill positions — experience that didn’t necessarily start last season, but saw a lot of playing time through injuries. “It does give us a step up this year,” Joseph says. Weakness: While there’s talent on the offensive and defensive lines, there’s not much depth. If the Demons can avoid injuries this season and keep the backups from playing early, that will help. But an injury could really hurt both lines as most of the starters play both ways. Players to watch: Dakota Gulley, OL/DL, Sr., 6-3, 310; Jake McCormick, QB, Jr., 6-3, 185; Paris Salas, RB/LB, Sr., 5-9, 165; Kellen Kyger, TE/DE, Sr., 6-2, 255; Brandon Gardner, WR/FS, Jr., 5-9, 170 In 2012: Expect improvement — and a winning record, Joseph says. Golden will be better, but may still miss the playoffs because of its tough schedule that includes its conference foes as well as rival Wheat Ridge. The 1-9 season a year ago has now turned to fuel: “They want to erase what happened last year,” Joseph says. “Our kids have taken ownership this year.” And, with a win in their last game a season ago, the Demons are focusing on their one-game winning streak.

MONARCH Coach: Phil Bravo 2011 record: 12-1 Returning starters: Nine offense, five defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Pine Creek in semifinals, 20-0) Strengths: The Coyotes have a lot of experience up front — and a lot of playoff experience, at that, “where kids are used to making decisions on the fly,” Bravo says. As a whole, it’s a veteran bunch. Weakness: “Depth,” Bravo says, “for sure.” But they’ll own it, and try to bring younger kids along in the non-conference schedule, easing them into playing time. Players to watch: Josh Hurst, OT, Sr., 6-0, 285; Ethan Marks, WR, Jr., 5-10, 185; Connor Fitzgerald, TE, Sr., 6-1, 230; Jamie Falloon, K, Sr., 5-10, 170 In 2012: The Coyotes don’t expect the 12-1 record from last season to take them very far. “We don’t look toward the past. Last year was last year,” Bravo says. Above all, “We just want to have fun,” the coach says. Whispers say this could be a special group, but Bravo tempers that expectation. “There’s a lot of things that have to happen,” he says.

MONTBELLO Coach: John Trahan 2011 record: 1-9 in 5A Returning starters: Nine offense, eight defense Last playoff appearance: 2008 Strengths: With 17 returning starters, and a number of others “that played a lot of football,” Trahan says, the experience will be there. Last year, the team had just six new players join the program; this year, it has 85 in all. Depth won’t be an issue, and the move down to 4A helps put the program’s numbers on par with the schools on the schedule. Weakness: Even with all the kids returning, youth is still an issue. Montbello has just six seniors, and the junior class must do the bulk of the work. Inexperience on special teams is also an issue. Players to watch: Jarrelle Nettles, LB/RB, So., 5-11, 230; AJ Thompson, QB, Jr., 6-2, 180; Marquell Ruiz, LB/SS, JR., 5-10, 175; Ramiro Delatorre, OL, Sr., 6-5, 265 In 2012: As down as the program has been, and even facing a tough league slate this season, Trahan says he’s excited about the future. Could that future start now? “I believe we’re going to surprise a lot of people and make the playoffs,” the coach says. Big things are expected from Thompson, the quarterback.

STANDLEY LAKE Coach: Don Morse 2011 record: 2-8 Returning starters: Four offense, seven defense Last playoff appearance: 2009 Strengths: The depth, Morse says, “is the best we’ve ever had.” Last year the program started with 68 kids, but injuries whittled that down to 38. It meant a lot of young kids played early, and those young kids now have a year’s worth of experience to their name. Team speed should be an advantage, too. Weakness: The only area without depth on the team is the offensive line. Much will ride on junior varsity kids and how they develop during the season. Players to watch: Anthony Ochiato, OT, Sr., 6-5, 280; Connor Durant, WR, So., 6-2, 185; Matt Fujinami, WR, Jr., 6-1, 170; Trey Jarvis, TE/DE, Jr., 6-2, 225; Jordan Downing, RB/LB, Jr. 6-0, 230 In 2012: The program has had two consecutive down season following four good years which included the school’s first trip to the playoffs. Is this a bounce-back year? “I really do feel like we could be as good as anybody,” Morse says. It will be important to keep the excitement up, the coach says. Playing different opponents in a new league this season could provide a spark.

Plains League

DAKOTA RIDGE Coach: Ron Woitalewicz 2011 record: 4-6 Returning starters: Eight offense, eight defense Last playoff appearance: 2010 Strengths: Midway through last season, following an 0-5 start, the coaching staff decided to let the younger kids play and get “more comfortable playing under the lights,” Woitalewicz says. That experience is already paying off this season. Last year, they were teaching basics. Now, it’s more advanced concepts. Weakness: As with many at this level, Dakota Ridge doesn’t yet have quality depth and lacks sheer numbers. The starters need to stay healthy and let their backups develop behind them. Players to watch: Zac Koch, QB, Sr., 5-8, 165; Aaron Nelson, RB, So., 5-9, 170; Jake Iannella, OLB Sr., 5-11, 190; Branon Fox, OLB, Sr. 6-1, 200; Alex Walker, NG/OL, Sr. 6-0, 240 In 2012: Following the 0-5 start in 2011, Dakota Ridge won four of its final five — including its last three games. The returners worked to build on that in the offseason, and the result should be a playoff team. Barring injuries, it’s a team that could advance in the postseason.

DENVER SOUTH Coach: Tony Lindsey Sr. 2011 record: 6-4 in 5A Returning starters: Nine offense, eight defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Bear Creek in first round, 35-20) Strengths: Last year’s young team has grown up, and it’s making for a complete group. Everyone knows about Philip Lindsay, the team’s star running back who has committed to CU, so often Tony Lindsay is asked what else his team has besides the senior. “Everything,” the coach always answers. There’s talent up and down this roster, including a very mobile line. Weakness: “I can’t call anything a weakness,” says Lindsay, struggling to find an answer. “Maybe special teams?” Then he laughs. If there are weaknesses, in Lindsay’s eyes, they are very minor. Players to watch: Philip Lindsay, RB, Sr.; Pete Williams, RB/SS, Sr.; Malik Tollerson, QB, Sr.; Sam Mabany, DT, 6-7; AJ Harris, DT; Shaun Johnson, CB, Jr.; Shaquille Williams, CB, Sr.; Lea Childs, LB In 2012: The Rebels, in the eyes of many, are among the favorites to win 4A this season. That includes Tony Lindsay himself. “I expect us to go a long way,” the coach says. “You know when it’s your time, and it’s just our time.”

GREEN MOUNTAIN Coach: Tom Ward 2011 record: 7-4 Returning starters: Four offense, one defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Castle View in first round, 35-27) Strengths: All four returning starters play on the offensive line, so the unit should pick up where it left off last season. One of those starters, though, may be limited from a torn labrum. Weakness: The Rams lost 30 seniors off of last year’s team, so the 2012 squad will be a youthful bunch. There are 18 seniors on this year’s team, but a lot of them are starting for the first time — making for an inexperienced team, as well. Players to watch: Henry Menjivar, CB, Sr.; Roland Warns, QB, Jr.; James LaBarbara, LB, Sr.; Dane Kelley, LB, Sr.; Jake Tyler, OT, Sr.; Schafer Mitch, WR/TE, Jr. In 2012: Coming off of the first playoff appearance “in ages” — Ward’s words — Green Mountain is hoping to get back to a tradition of winning. Things may be tough early, as the team works its way through the inexperience but Ward’s goal is to “improve each game, and see where we are with two or three games left.”

JOHN F. KENNEDY Coach: Rich Martinez 2011 record: 11-1 in 3A Returning starters:Four offense, six defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Palisade in quarterfinals, 47-7) Strengths: This is a team that knows its system, and Martinez praises the squad’s football IQ. “They’ve learned how to win,” the coach says. The team speed should be impressive this season, too. Weakness: The Commanders did lose a lot to graduation, and as such, the youth will be evident early. Also, with moving up a class to 4A, the numbers in terms of depth aren’t yet there. Players to watch: Kody Mansur, LT/DT, Sr., 6-5, 270; Jorge Martinez, QB/LB, Sr., 6-0, 190, WR; Kenny Crowthers, S/RB, Sr., 5-8, 170; Chris Velarde, DE, Sr., 5-11, 185; Louis Hernandez, CB, Sr., 5-7, 150; Mike Montoya, CB/WR, Jr., 6-0, 175; Michael Lujan, RB/LB, Jr., 6-1, 180; Nelson Pham, FB/DE, Sr., 5-9, 175 In 2012: Kennedy is fully embracing its move to 4A, and expects to contend for a league title this season. The 11-1 season last year helped lay the foundation for a building tradition. “Winning is contagious,” Martinez says. “We have a little slogan this year: tradition never graduates. As a staff, we were skeptical because we graduated a lot of kids, but the kids believe. That’s half the battle, and we’ve never had that.”

LITTLETON Coach: Jay Lukes 2011 record: 1-9 Returning starters: Eight offense, six defense Last playoff appearance: 2008 Strengths: The Lions return a lot of veterans – though most of them are juniors. It means the learning curve this year wasn’t as steep. “They’re grasping our system well,” Lukes says. “The kids game in ready to go, and understood.” Weakness: With 47 kids combined on the varsity and junior varsity, depth will be an issue all around. A lot of kids will have to play both ways, too, so an injury could hurt. Players to watch: Paul Holden, C/DE, Sr.; Jake Bergman, WR/S, Sr.; Nick McNamee, QB, Jr. In 2012: Littleton should be improved, especially because their numbers are more on par with their opponents this year. It’s a team that could win seven games, or a team that could win three. The difference, Lukes says, will be “bouncing back when things don’t go our way.” Intensity and work ethic have improved from last season.

WHEAT RIDGE Coach: Reid Kahl 2011 record: 8-4 Returning starters: Four offense, four defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Valor Christian in quarterfinals, 42-0) Strengths: The backfield will be deep, with a mix of veterans and youth. Tradition also plays in the Farmers’ favor, as does a productive summer. Weakness: The line isn’t deep. The team lost a lot of seniors on the whole, leaving a few positions inexperienced. Players to watch: Dominic Rael, RB/LB, Sr.; Tyler Kubasta, TE/LB, Sr.; Deion Trejo, TE/DE, Sr.; Tyler Bender, OL/DL, Sr.; Matt Workman, OL/DL, Sr.; Averee Mason, RB/DB, Jr.; Tanner Weakland, RB/LB, Jr. In 2012: As always, Wheat Ridge’s initial sesaon goal is to win its league and make the playoffs. But accomplishing that this year will depend on how the school’s younger players respond during the season. “We’re younger than we’ve been in a while,” Kahl says.

Pikes Peak League

AIR ACADEMY Coach: Mike Hillstrom 2011 record: 4-6 Returning starters: Eight offense, five defense Last playoff appearance: 2007 Strengths: The Kadets will be talented at the skill positions, and “We have a lot of experience for the first time in a while,” Hillstrom says. His team lost just seven seniors from last year, a small class that forced other kids to step up early. Weakness: There are a few unknowns on the roster as they’ll try to fill spots at linebacker and on the offensive line. “We need to have kids step up,” Hillstrom says. They’ll be aided on the line by Justin Petrash, a junior who has been starting since he was a freshman, and Kyle Routsong, a senior. Players to watch: Kevin Kimbrow, QB, Sr.; Caleb Cuneio, OLB/RB, Sr.; Justin Petrash, OL, Jr.; Kyle Routsong, OL, Sr.; Zack Sanders, WR, Jr. In 2012: Air Academy snapped an 18-game losing streak in its second game last season, and went on to finish 4-6. Now the Kadets seek their first winning season since going 6-4 in 2008. “We’re looking to build on that momentum for sure,” Hillstrom says. The new league will present a challenge, though. Quarterback Kevin Kimbrow is ready to star this season. He accounted for 30 total touchdowns last season, 18 through the air.

FALCON Coach: Trevor Hudson 2011 record: 7-4 Returning starters: Seven offense, nine defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Longmont in first round, 42-21) Strengths: Falcon’s tailbacks should stand out this year, led by Kalen Ballage, who Hudson calls “the best athlete in Colorado.” Team speed will be big for the Falcons. Weakness: There isn’t much size on the offensive line. “We have guys that can get the job done, but we don’t have the 6-6 kids,” Hudson says. “But it’s a weakness, not a hindrance. It’s something we can overcome.” Players to watch: Kalen Ballage, RB/WR/OLB, Jr., 6-2, 215; Keenan Britton, RB/LB, Sr., 5-10, 195; Brodie Hicks, WR/FS, Sr., 6-2, 185; Wyatt Aaberg, LB/QB/RB, So., 6-0, 195; Devin Dunblazer, OL/DL, Sr., 6-2, 255 In 2012: We’ll just let Hudson handle this: “State or bust,” he says. “We understand that comes with a lot of hard work, and no one in 4A is going to give it to us, but we feel like we’re going to put in the work. Everyone should. If we don’t go to state, we had a bad season.”

LIBERTY Coach: Jaron Cohen 2011 record: 3-7 Returning starters: Nine offense, seven defense Last playoff appearance: 2009 Strengths: The Lancers are loaded with returners, including a lot of three-year starters. They bring back the entire offensive line. Weakness: Shane Walker, a senior, moves from running back to quarterback this season. Liberty looks to get him some reps early to help him ease into that role. In Cohen’s fifth year, he finally has a lot of upperclassmen. “This will be the biggest team we’ve had,” the coach says. They’ll be competitive in every game, and seek to finish in the top half of the league.

PINE CREEK Coach: Todd Miller 2011 record: 13-1 Returning starters: Zero offense, three defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Valor Christian in championship, 66-10) Strengths: These Eagles will be defined by their work ethic and tenacity, Miller says. It’s a group ready to step up into the many roles vacated by last year’s seniors. “This is their opportunity to step up and keep the legacy going,” the coach says. Weakness: Pine Creek returns just three total starters — the Eagles even lost their kicking specialists — so there isn’t much game experience back. “Sometimes that’s overrated, sometimes that’s underrated. Different individuals are going to react differently to it,” Miller says. “We’ve got to get our guys on the same page, and they’ve got to be ready to perform early.” Players to watch: Dalton Fields, DL/OL, Sr.; Chase Stevens, LB, Sr.; Hayden Cortez, LB, Sr.; Matt List, LB, Jr.; Cameron Beemster, LB, Sr.; Devin Dolbeare, DB, Sr. In 2012: Pine Creek started the season 13-0 before it ran into Valor Christian in the state title game – a 66-10 defeat. That loss isn’t soon forgotten. “We didn’t do a good job of representing ourselves in the state championship game,” Miller says. So what to make of a team that returns just three starters? “We expect to stay at the same level that we’ve been at in previous years,” the coach says. “There are no excuses just because we graduated kids. That should make no difference. It’s one game at a time, but no excuses.”

PONDEROSA Coach: Jamie Woodruff 2011 record: 4-6 Returning starters: Five offense, four defense Last playoff appearance: 2010 Strengths: The offensive line, anchored by Michigan commit Chris Fox, returns a lot of experience. Weakness: The Mustangs, lacking depth, will need to platoon players. They’ll try to avoid playing kids both ways where possible, “but it’s going to be very difficult,” Woodruff says. Players to watch: Chris Fox, OL, Sr.; Dillon Spradling, RB, Jr.; Corry Williams, FB, Sr.; Jared Hormberg, OL, Sr.; Cody Wilson, C, Jr.; Tanner Augustine, QB, Sr.; Drew Stephon, S, Sr.; Corey Nilsen, DE, Sr.; Chad Adams, LB, Sr. In 2012: Woodruff is back at the helm of Ponderosa, where he was head coach from 1993-2005. (The coach was also defensive coordinator at the school in 2009 and 2010.) His goals are lofty for this team. “We practice like we’re trying to win the state championship,” Woodruff says. “If you don’t practice that way, I don’t think you ever get there.” Expect Fox to see some time on the defensive line. Spradling is a transfer from Arizona, and his arrival allows the team to move Chad Adams to linebacker.

RAMPART Coach: JJ Owens 2011 record: 5-5 in 5A Returning starters: Three offense, four defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Horizon in first round, 49-0) Strengths: Owens was pleased with his team’s effort in the offseason. “I thin that’s going to pay off,” he says. “They’ve just been working their tails off.” Positional strengths include running back, quarterback, defensive line and the secondary. Weakness: The Rams will be very young this season, and the hope “to bring them along rather fast.” Owens may start a few sophomores. Players to watch: Clark Jones, LB/RB, Sr.; Brad Looney, WR/DB, Sr.; Marcus Mason, NG/RB, Sr.; Travis Knoche, QB, Jr.; Donovan Oldham, WR, So. In 2012: Rampart returns its leading tackler (Jones) and is excited about Knoche at quarterback. But Owens is raving about Looney, a senior who hasn’t played football since his freshman season. The coach was impressed by Looney’s leadership on the baseball team, and asked him to come out for football in the summer. “He’s a phenomenal athlete,” Owens says, “a game-changer on offense and a lockdown corner.” After dropping down from 5A, Rampart expects to compete for a league title, and Owens says the tough schedule last season should help his team this year.

SAND CREEK Coach: Rod Baker 2011 record: 2-8 Returning starters: Six offense, five defense Last playoff appearance: Never qualified Strengths: Baker, now in his second season, returns a lot of players that “have a great sense of the process and how things should be approached,” the coach says. Weakness: Like most teams, Sand Creek doesn’t yet have the depth it desires. Players to watch: Tuli Laulu, OL/DL, Sr., 6-2, 275; Chris Thomas, OL/DL, Sr., 6-2, 280; John Cowan, LB, Sr., 5-10, 175; Michael DeCarmo, QB, Jr., 6-1, 180, Jeremy Jaquess, LB, Jr., 6-1, 185; Darin Johns, DB, Jr., 6-2, 165; Jordan Preston, WR, 6-0, 165; Austin Schleder, OL/DL, 6-3, 265; Dominic Reed, RB, 5-10, 170; Jon Nygaard, OL/DL, 6-2, 265. In 2012: Baker says he expects his team to be competitive on a week-to-week basis.

VISTA RIDGE Coach: Les Johnson 2011 record: 9-2 in 3A Returning starters: Eight offense, five defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Lewis-Palmer in first round, 39-33) Strengths: The Wolves will be fast this year, and that speed will be really evident at the skill positions. Weakness: Though Vista Ridge returns 13 starters, “We’re younger than we’ve ever been,” Johnson says. A lot of kids will playing with the varsity squad for the first time this season. Players to watch: Brandon Cartagena, RB, Sr.; Brayden Stewart, QB, Sr.; Aaron Johnson, WR, Sr.; Tyler Hunt, LB, So.; Dedrick Lee, RB, Jr.; Noah Gable, WR/K, Sr. In 2012: Johnson, the team’s interim coach last season, moves into the full-time role this year — and that continuity should help the move to 4A. Vista Ridge lived up to high expectations during the regular season last year, but lost in the first round of the playoffs. This year’s aim? To take the next step. “We’ve talked about (last year) several times, of our expectation (this year), and not to take anything for granted,” Johnson says.

CAÑON CITY Coach: Tom O’Rourke 2011 record: 10-1 in 3A Returning starters: Six offense, three defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Frederick in first round, 7-6) Strengths: The Tigers return solid running backs and inside linebackers. Weakness: Early on, it will be a matter of bringing young kids along on both lines, and in the defensive secondary. “We really have to try and find an offensive line and defensive line,” O’Rourke says. “Graduation kind of killed us on those two spots.” Players to watch: Oren Bivens, OL, Sr., 6-1, 225; Austin Douglas, RB/LB, Sr., 6-1, 200; R.J. Stainbrook, RB, Sr., 5-9, 180; Tyler Templeton, RB/DB, Jr., 6-0, 185; Logan Nethercott, QB, Jr., 6-1 In 2012: O’Rourke is in his first season as head coach, having been the team’s defensive coordinator last season. And, he says, “I don’t know where we’re going to finish.” That’s mostly because of the move up to 4A, and the fact that Cañon City hasn’t seen most of the teams it’ll be playing in four years. “I don’t even know the systems other schools are running,” the coach says. Last year’s successful season (a 10-0 start) ended on a sour note (a first-round playoff loss), so the Tigers will look to erase that this year. “They have a bad taste in their mouth,” O’Rourke says. They’ll have a new quarterback in Nethercott, but the junior did play in that playoff game, so he has experience.

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN Coach: Brian Sherman 2011 record: 8-3 Returning starters: Six offense, five defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Broomfield in first round, 44-10) Strengths: The majority of the skill guys are back, save for quarterback. It’s also “one of the fastest teams I’ve ever coached,” Sherman says. Weakness: The Indians lost all five offensive linemen, so it’s going to “take time to get (the new starters) experience and figure out the speed of the game,” the coach says. Players to watch: Donivan Harville, TE/DE, Sr.; Alec Snyder, QB, Sr.; James Sullivan, RB, Sr.; Ryan McMahon, RB, Sr.; Kevin Paulson, CB/WR, Sr. In 2012: Cheyenne Mountain is aiming for another playoff appearance. It will depend on how quickly the line adapts to the varsity speed. Snyder is a transfer from Tucson, Ariz.

MESA RIDGE Coach: Rob Braaten 2011 record: 5-5 Returning starters: Eight offense, six defense Last playoff appearance: 2010 Strengths: The Grizzlies return their entire offensive line, “and they’ve been having a good camp,” Braaten says. Team speed should also be a strength. “We move pretty well,” the coach says. Weakness: Mesa Ridge needs to replace Devante Johnson at running back, which will be a tall task. The front-runner during camp is Tremell Stanley, a junior. Mesa Ridge will also have a new quarterback, and depth is a concern at linebacker. Players to watch: Brayton Medina, OL/DL, Sr.; Morris Gilbert, RB/LB, Sr.; Cameron VanDeCasteel, TE/DL, Sr.; Tremell Stanley, RB/LB, Jr.; Matt Faraci, OL/DL, Sr. In 2012: Already facing a tough league slate, Mesa Ridge didn’t do itself any favors with its non-league schedule. The Grizzlies will get a good idea of where they stand after the opener with Denver South, but should also go on to challenge for the league title. “I think we’re going to be good,” Braaten says, “but I also think the league is going to be good.”

PALMER RIDGE Coach: Tom Pulford 2011 record: 7-4 in 3A Returning starters: Six offense, five defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Silver Creek, 28-24) Strengths: Last season, the Bears’ strength was their defense. Expect more of the same this season, especially early. Weakness: The offense needs to find consistency, something missing a year ago. Jordan Brame, moved from running back to quarterback will need to mature quickly. Pulford also wants his team to get better at picking up timely first downs, as well as improve in the red zone. Players to watch: Winn Howard, RB/LB, Sr.; Brad Paffett, RB/S, Sr.; Jordan Brame, CB/QB, Sr.; Nick Majic, OL, Sr.; Josh Romero, DL, Sr.; Jason Pope, C/NG, Sr. In 2012: The Bears face a tough schedule, both in conference and out. As such, the goal is to be in every game — “and finish out in the fourth quarter,” Pulford says.

PUEBLO CENTENNIAL Coach: Mike Palumbo 2011 record: 7-3 in 3A Returning starters: Eight offense, five defense Last playoff appearance: 2009 Strengths: The offense should be something to deal with for opponents this season. The entire line is back, as is the Bulldogs’ leading rusher and leading receiver. Weakness: The defense, on the other hand, doesn’t return much experience. “We’ve got some good young athletes,” Palumbo says, “but not a lot of varsity playing experience. The sooner they come around, the better we’ll be.” Players to watch: Brian Niccoli, RB/CB, Sr.; Sam Duden, WR/LB, Sr.; John Lieder, OL, Sr.; Tristan Williams, TE/DE, Jr.; Quincy Kindred, RB/S, So. In 2012: Traditionally near the top of the state in rushing – Centennial was fifth in 3A last year – the run game figures to be among 4A’s best this year, especially with the returners. Once the defense gets up to speed, the Bulldogs will be a more complete team. “Well be competitive, that’s for sure,” Palumbo says.

PUEBLO SOUTH Coach: Ryan Goddard 2011 record: 2-8 Returning starters:Six offense, four defense Last playoff appearance: 2010 Strengths: Goddard’s is a close-knit bunch. “It’s just a bunch of guys willing to work together and have a desire to play for one another,” the coach says. “They have a good sense of team.” Weakness: Depth, like many schools in 4A, is a concern. Especially on the lines. Players to watch: Tyler Eve, TE/LB, Sr.; John Carmack, OL/DL, Sr.; Isaiah Palacio, LB/OL, Jr.; Chad Tofoya, S/RB, Sr.; Cody Krause, LB/C, Jr. In 2012: The Colts play a lot of sophomores last year, which means they come back as experienced juniors. “I like the makeup of our team,” Goddard says. “I like the group we have.” South faces a tough schedule, though not as tough as last season. If the Colts stay healthy, they should be in contention in the league.

PUEBLO WEST Coach: Monte Pinkerton 2011 record: 4-7 Returning starters: Nine offense, eight defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Valor Christian in first round, 56-0) Strengths: A young team that got a lot of experience last season means “they’ve been through it,” Pinkerton says. That a lot of starters return also means the Cyclones should be able to build some depth. Weakness: Pinkerteam would like his team to be more diverse on offense, which means an improvement in the passing game is needed. Players to watch: Derek Jackson, RB, Sr., 5-8, 185; Diego Rojas, OL, Sr., 6-2, 305; Jacob Torres, LB, Sr., 5-10, 175; Peter Ward, WR/S, Sr., 6-0, 180; Rayshon Fuchs, S, Sr., 5-9, 165 In 2012: Pueblo West should compete for the league title. Expect a solid running game, and an improved defense.

WIDEFIELD Coach: Fred Marjerrison 2011 record: 9-2 Returning starters: Six offense, seven defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Wheat Ridge in first round, 19-13) Strengths: Expect athletes all over the field again this year, as the Gladiators return all of their skill guys. “Athletically, we’re going to be as good as we’ve been the last couple of years,” Marjerrison says. Weakness: The entirety of both lines graduated, meaning Widefield will need to develop kids as the season goes along. The biggest issue will be on the offensive line, though that will be helped along by the spread attack Marjerrison runs. On defense, “We don’t worry about size,” the coach says, so that line isn’t as much of a concern. Players to watch: Mario Sanabria, QB, Sr.; Eugene Sanabria, WR/LB/DB, Sr.; Marquis Coddington, RB, Sr.; Markeice Bellamy, LB, Sr.; DQ Baker, ATH, Jr. In 2012: The Gladiators started the 2011 season with a loss, then won nine games in a row before losing in the playoffs. Now, Widefield seeks consistency. It may be tougher with this year’s schedule, and there’s also this: “We can’t hide from anybody,” Marjerrison says. “Everyone knows who we are now.” Eugene Sanabria, twin brother of the quarterback Mario, plays everywhere on defense, and has even played on the line in the past. Baker is a do-everything guy who “doesn’t give you a good target to hit,” his coach says. “He’s really crafty.”

Southwest League

CENTRAL (G.J.) Coach: Vern McGee 2011 record: 2-8 in 5A Returning starters: Three offense, four defense Last playoff appearance: 2009 Strengths: Pressed into starting because of injuries last season, a number of players return with experience they otherwise wouldn’t have. It could payoff this year. “That is our big hope,” McGee says. The defensive line returns three starters. Weakness: The Warriors have just 11 seniors, and will be starting sophomores and maybe even a few freshmen. Though that could set up well for future seasons, the lack of experience will hurt this year. Players to watch: Connor Williamson, LB/DE, Sr., 6-2, 195; Noah Sanchez, FB/QB/LB, Sr., 5-11, 215; Jacob Crosby, DL, Jr., 6-1, 225; Ben Dalton, DL, Jr., 6-2, 240 In 2012: Central drops down to 4A, but its schedule is still a challenge. The Warriors weren’t competitive in games the latter half of last season; they hope to change that this year. Williamson is the team’s fastest player at linebacker, and was leading the team in tackles last year before breaking his collar bone. Sanchez, a fullback most of last season, figures to start at quarterback.

DURANGO Coach: Greg Wyatt 2011 record: 4-7 Returning starters: Three offense, six defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Monarch in first round, 53-3) Strengths: “We’re athletic in most positions,” Wyatt says. He also has depth along his offensive line. Weakness: The Demons are replacing a two-year starting quarterback as well a three-year starting wideout. They’ll quickly need to find the right formula for big plays. Players to watch: Austin Miles, OL, Sr.; Tyler Worley, RB/DB, Jr.; Blake Dunlap, DB/WR, Jr.; Daniel Gustavson, DE, Jr.; Jeremy Szura, QB/LB, Jr. In 2012: Durango is one of the few 4A program with three-consecutive trips to the postseason – but “we haven’t gotten where we want to go in the playoffs yet,” Wyatt says. Can the Demons make the next step this year? “Being so young,” the coach says, “we’ve got to go out and prove it.” They’ll have a good test early, opening with Cheyenne Mountain.

MONTROSE Coach: Todd Casebier 2011 record: 9-2 Returning starters: Seven offense, six defense Last playoff appearance: 2011 (Lost to Greeley West in first round, 38-7) Strengths: The offensive backfield will be solid, returning both a quarterback and tailback. The Indians will also have a good defensive line and kicking game. Weakness: New cornerbacks must be eased into their roles, and depth all around the roster will be an issue. Players to watch: Angelo Yungren, RB, Jr., 5-11, 172; Drew Casebier, QB, Sr., 6-1, 178; Blake Alexander, FS/TE, Sr., 6-1, 177; Travis Hauger, OL, Sr., 6-3, 212; Pete Shearer, LB, Jr., 6-0, 180; Conner Husky, OL/LB, Jr., 5-10, 195; Ira Wooten, DL/FB, Jr., 6-1, 195; David Schroeter, OL, Sr., 6-1, 185; Brendan Woodruff, WR, Sr., 5-8, 145 In 2012: The Indians should continue the progress made last season, even facing the tough schedule that they are. “If we can survive it,” Casebier says, “we’ll be pretty good.” His team lost in the first round last season, a hurdle they look to get over this year. “Bottom line is we need to be better in Novermber,” the coach says.
