CONIFER — It wasn’t exactly what you would expect out of a Zero Week performance.

But Conifer football coach Larry Fitzmaurice will take it every week.

A crisp offense looked to be in midseason form as the Lobos trampled Glenwood Springs 42-19 on Saturday in a Class 3A nonleague game.

“We were hitting on all cylinders in the first half,” said Fitzmaurice, whose team will travel to Centaurus in Week 1. “I think it took both teams a while to figure out what was going on.”

Unfortunately for the visiting Demons, they were down 21-0 before they figured out what was going on.

The Conifer offense, led by senior quarterback Thomas Kim’s guidance, picked apart the Glenwood defense.

When Kim and Seth Trujillo weren’t hooking up for one of their six first-half completions — Trujillo also caught a pass on a halfback option from Hunter Shively to finish with 103 yards in two quarters — a stable of running backs was having a heyday behind a line anchored by 6-foot-6, 300-pound Don Fuller.

The Lobos ran the ball for 248 yards and passed for another 143.

“We knew there were going to be a bunch of mistakes,” Fitzmaurice said. “If you are going to make mistakes, make them going 190 miles per hour.”

Glenwood Springs made things interesting when Auston Tribble returned the second-half opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to make it a 28-13 Conifer lead, but the Demons’ defense had no answer for Conifer up front.

“The O-line and D-line are as good as you are going to find at this level,” said Glenwood coach Rocky Whitworth, whose team committed 15 penalties for 107 yards. “We couldn’t beat our third-grade team doing that.”
