An 11-year-old girl who was home alone started a fire while she was cooking Monday afternoon at the Briarwood Commons condominium complex in Golden.
When firefighters arrived flames were billowing from a second-floor porch, and the fire spread to the attic and forced the evactuation of all four units in the building, according to the Golden Fire Department .
The girl and a family dog escaped injury, but two cats died in the fire.
The girl said she was cooking when paper towels close to the burner caught fire. Then she ran to a neighbor’s house for help.
