ANCHORAGE, Alaska—A 22-year-old Chugiak man will serve seven years in prison for driving drunk and mowing down two pedestrians early on Jan. 1.
The Anchorage Daily News reports () Tex Daniels II was sentenced Thursday.
Ashley Brotherton and Clayton Wilbanks had moved from Colorado to Anchorage just months before the crash. On New Year’s Eve, they were walking home from a concert after midnight in downtown Anchorage.
Prosecutors said Daniels lost control of his pickup as he tried to pass another vehicle, climbed the curb and barreled onto the sidewalk at 50 to 60 mph. He hit the couple from behind. According to witnesses, he tried to drive away but was restrained by passers-by until police officers arrived.
His blood-alcohol content was 0.226 percent, almost three times over the legal limit.
