PUEBLO, Colo.—Same-sex domestic partners of city employees in Pueblo can soon be added to their partners’ health insurance coverage.

The City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday to allow domestic partner benefits, following passionate pleas by the public for and against the proposal. Council President Chris Kaufman voted against the proposal, citing his Christian values and the fact that Colorado hasn’t legalized same-sex unions.

The City Council had rejected the proposal in September after some members said they had unanswered questions about it. The Council later revived the proposal and voted on it this week.

At least a half dozen other Colorado communities also allow partner benefits.

The city of Pueblo estimates that eight employees will sign up for the benefits at a cost to the city of about $54,000 annually.
