LONGMONT — A Weld County jury on Thursday found a 23-year-old man guilty of first-degree murder in the Nov. 11, 2011, execution style shooting death of a Frederick man.
Draton Mares was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the murder of Thomas Bashline.
He was also convicted of aggravated motor vehicle theft for taking Bashline’s truck after the shooting and was sentenced to 40 years on that count. He drove it to Boulder, where it was towed for being parked illegally. The gun was inside the truck.
The trial opened Oct. 17 and closed Wednesday afternoon, with a jury of 10 women and two men beginning deliberations around 4:30 p.m. They retired for the evening just after 5 p.m. and resumed work Thursday morning. They returned a verdict at 2 p.m Thursday.
