COMMERCE CITY, Colo.—Commerce City officials are urging residents to check their water-softener systems after a California-based company warned it might have improperly installed as many as 150 systems.

City spokeswoman Michelle Halstead says Aquakleen Products Inc. notified the city in September, and the city gave the company 30 days to fix any problems.

Court records show Aquakleen was ordered to pay $927,000 to a couple who drank tainted water. The Denver Post ( ) reports that their home’s clean water system was connected to their sewage line, which backed up into their drinking water system.

Halstead says inspections from the city’s building safety division will be available in coming weeks.

The South Adams County Water and Sanitation District, which manage the city’s water, was not available for comment Saturday.
