Poor bassists. When The White Stripes emerged, folks were stunned they could create a full sound as only a two-piece. Now, itap a detail hardly worth mentioning. Whereas a power trio used to be the most stripped-down rock band, now we’ve got power duos like Denver’s In the Whale. These two create hardy rock music more robust than many five-pieces. Need proof? Check out “Girlfriend,” posted here with a two-finger discount. This track is the band’s follow-up to their EP released earlier this year, and there’s currently no word about a subsequent album. The pair will be bringing their aggressive-yet-playful style to in Boulder on Nov. 9 for CD release party. Tickets are $10.
When musicians have a “side project,” it tends to be an outlet to explore ideas too difficult for their core audience. Men In Burka is an exception. The group’s members have all built a reputation in Denver and beyond by exploring more abstract, less commercial electronic sounds in groups like – as much a band as an art collective – and . Here, with Men In Burka, itap not boundaries that are pushed as much as borders. Musical and cultural sounds of Pakistan are blended with more-mainstream hip-hop and danceable electronic. The resulting blend is somehow so natural yet so contentious. Itap a conflict with a beautiful, sonorous ring. Perhaps itap shortsighted to call this a “side project.” Members Kamran Kahn, Mario Zoots and Josh Powers seem to be ever working on various projects, musical and otherwise.
