The 10-day celebration of Steamboat Ski Resort’s 50th birthday begins Friday night with an opening ceremony and lighting of the caldron at Mount Werner’s Gondola Square.

The kickoff includes a special anniversary dinner at Hazie’s restaurant on Mount Werner Circle and a golden gala in the Champagne Powder Room atop the Steamboat Gondola.

Events continue Saturday on Gondola Square, with a Torchlight Parade followed by a fireworks from the top of Christie Peak beginning at 5:15 p.m.

At 2 p.m. Saturday on the square, a 25-year-old time capsule, from 1988, will be opened and put on display, and at 3 p.m. there will be complimentary slices of a massive birthday cake, according to the resort.

Free concerts and other festivities also are planned. The celebration concludes Jan. 21 with the annual Bud Light Cowboy Downhill.
